BCGS helps missions professionals gain insights that advance their ministry. A student recently told me how they plan to apply course material to establish a sustainable agricultural program in Kenya; and another is using what they’ve learned in their work with refugees in Haiti. I teach practical skills for outreach. We have established partner- ships with two Haitian Christian development agencies and two Dominican churches to facilitate teams. Three teams have already been fielded and another three are in process to go!

Teams to Haiti have had the opportunity to share their faith, prayer-walk through neighborhoods, distribute Bibles and tracts, visit and pray with people in their homes or tents. Teams have moved tons of rubble (literally), installed a water tank and inverter system, held medical clinics, leveled a road, and purchased construction materials. In addition, they’ve distributed food, clothing, and shelter in refugee tent-camps.

STEM hopes to send an additional six teams in 2010 to assist with the relief efforts. STEM plans to stay engaged in disaster relief and clean up and rebuilding efforts in Haiti for years to come. Please consider joining a team or recruiting a team to go with STEM, bringing the hope of the Gospel to the people of Haiti while helping them to recover and rebuild!

We have long felt that Chile should be a leader among missionary-sending nations-if not in total numbers at least in missionaries per capita. The church has grown strong and is reported to have the highest percentage of evangelicals among all Latin American nations.

Now national Christians need to see that Christ is counting on them to join forces with those who are taking the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Bethany’s thrust in Chile

To mobilize, train and send missionaries is the reason three American couples have initiated “Programa Amor.” Dan and Arlene Cool, Ed and Taleatha Hailey and Dion and Natasha Mueller have joined to provide the vision-sharing and cross-cultural training that young Chileans need as they consider Christ’s command to “make disciples of all nations.”

Preparations have been made. Alliances are being formed. Classroom space has been allocated. Seven students are enrolled and the missions school is up and running.

Dolly and I had the task of helping the missionaries with team dynamics to see that they are all on the same page .Everyone is needed for the central task. We met with each couple and listened to their concerns, but as together we analyzed the different styles and dreams of each person, we see how each has a vital role to play.

More workers are needed! Chileans have been added to the teaching staff and there is great potential. We would love to see them joined by young people from the USA and abroad with a vision to train and empower new workers. Please pray for Bethany grads and others to join the “Programa Amor” (program of love) team.

We felt Sunday night was a fitting close. We gathered at a local church, shared the vision, enlisted help and extended a call to young people willing to take up their cross and follow Christ to the mission fields of the world. We were happy to see many gather at the altar to consecrate their lives to God to serve Him wherever He calls them to work.

We tried to get everyone to come out from under the shade for a photo op but Filipinos tend to shun the sun. Still many did and it took 3 shots to get a panorama of even a portion of the nearly one thousand who attended.

Stateside Visitors

Tim & Carol Freeman and Val Eliason flew in from the US to join in the celebration. Diane Simon (formerly a single on our team) and her husband Owen traveled from nearby Palawan province to be a part as well. We joined on stage for a rousing rendition of the Ilokano hymn “Balligi” (Victory in English).

Testimonies

One evening was reserved for testimonies and a number shared that of the 6 joint conferences that Bethany Mindoro and Bethany Isabela have held since 1995, this was the best! A number came up to us and thanked us profusely for helping to raise funds to make this celebration possible. Thanks to all of you who contributed gifts toward the conference.

Memories

Heather was two months old when we arrived in Isabela in 1989. Krista was born there in 1992. This is home for these girls. Krista took off 2 days of class to join in and could be seen taking pictures of old favorite trees and other memorable sites.

Bethany missionaries in Mexico are working both to establish the church where it hasn’t taken root within Mexico and to mobilize missionaries to be sent to the least-reached peoples of the world.

Lowell and Sheri Glick:

“Because the state of Mexico where we live is one of the least reached areas in the country, we have a new plan to raise up 15 workers and reach 50 towns or villages-called 15-50 Vision.” A five-minute radio program with a song and a short devotional has been launched. Weekly a booklet or literature is offered free upon request; personal follow up with these seekers is planned. Seekers will receive evangelism and discipleship as the Glicks and national workers travel out to their villages. Study groups will be started with clusters of new believers with the goal of establishing 50 churches. Prayer and recruiting are ongoing for 15 national workers who own this vision.

There are 1,000 villages in Zacatecas which have no churches established!

“In several places we are seeing hunger to know more of God’s message.”

Kerry and Jan Olson:

Sending 100 missionaries during the next ten years…. It’s possible! This is a new goal of our large congregation here in Mexico. However, the vision of training, sending and supporting 100 missionaries is not the primary focus. We do not want to fall into the trap of “sending just to send”. Our emphasis is not on the quantity, but rather quality. Quality with regard to two areas: obviously, the type of workers we send, but just as important is the location these workers will be placed, primarily among the least-reached peoples of the world, who have little or no chance to hear the Gospel.

“Mobilizing the Latin American Church to fulfill the Great Commission from the world’s largest city.”

“We consider it a tremendous blessing to be a part of what God is doing in Mexico and around the world.”

Sam (Ghana) and Jonhild (Faroe Islands) met aboard the Youth with a Mission ship, Anastasis, where both worked, traveling from country to country in ministry. With a missions vision Sam began studies at Bethany College of Missions. Later he and Jonhild were married, and both completed studies at the college. The Dunyas were led by God back to Sam’s home country in 1995.

Since then they have seen more than forty churches planted, new leaders trained, and agricultural projects undertaken to help Ghanaian Christians become self-supporting and able to contribute to ministry.

One of the churches was started after a desperately sick man was carried into a meeting at the church where Sam was pastor. He received prayer and was able to walk back to his village. The village people were so amazed that they too wanted a church. The man became a believer and is now pastor of the new church.

A few years ago Sam and a team went to a village and announced to the village chiefs that they wanted to start a church. They were soundly rejected and told that the village did not need or want a church.

Later a team returned to the village and announced that a medical team would treat people’s illnesses at no cost; they were welcomed.

After treating people, the team determined that water used to drink, cook, bath, and irrigate was near where the cattle grazed and was the source of many illnesses. They offered to drill a 180 foot deep well to provide the clean water people needed.

On dedication day for the new well, in May 2008, people gathered to thank God for the fresh water and hear an evangelistic message by visiting pastor George Foster. Afterwards, the village leaders called Sam and Jonhild, “Come see something we have for you.”

The leaders led them to a plot of roped-off cleared land and said, “This is for you to build a church.”

Sam and Jonhild have four children and live in the capital city of Accra where they supervise the work throughout the country and plan for new church plants in the capital.
